Vedic literature is the oldest written body of knowledge in the world. It provides comprehensive information on science, medicine, philosophy, logic, and spirituality. Rather than presenting blind dogmas, these texts present a logical, scientific, and experiential framework for understanding consciousness and our relationship with the cosmos.
Within the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, two principal scriptures serve as the foundation of all teachings: the Bhagavad Gita and the Srimad Bhagavatam.
1. Bhagavad Gita (The Widescreen Manual of Life)
Spoken 5,000 years ago by Lord Krishna to His friend Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, the Bhagavad Gita consists of 700 verses. It addresses the fundamental crisis of Arjuna, who was paralyzed by doubt and anxiety. The Gita explains the five basic truths of existence:
- ฤชลvara (The Supreme Controller): The nature of God as personal, controller, and source.
- Jฤซva (The Soul): The nature of the individual spirit soul โ eternal, conscious, and separate from the body.
- Prakแนti (Material Nature): The physical world, controlled by three modes: goodness, passion, and ignorance.
- Kฤla (Time): The eternal force of change that governs the material world.
- Karma (Action & Reaction): The law governing our choices, actions, and their consequences.
2. Srimad Bhagavatam (The Post-Graduate Spiritual Science)
While the Bhagavad Gita represents the basic foundation of spiritual life, the ลrฤซmad-Bhฤgavatam (consisting of 18,000 verses across 12 cantos) is the mature fruit of Vedic wisdom. It goes beyond the basic concepts of the soul and reincarnation to describe the personal life, pastimes, incarnations, and intimate relationships of God (Krishna) and His pure devotees.
It is a guide to pure love of God, offering detailed accounts of creation, cosmology, history, and spiritual philosophy.
Srila Prabhupada's Bhaktivedanta Purports
Our Founder-Acarya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, translated these texts from original Sanskrit into English along with comprehensive commentaries called "Bhaktivedanta Purports."
His commentaries are unique because they do not present academic speculation or dry interpretations; instead, they present the teachings exactly as they have been passed down through the disciplic succession (*paramparฤ*) for thousands of years, making them practical, dynamic, and deeply applicable to modern youth.
