Is death the final end of existence? Or is it simply a doorway to something else? The Vedic scriptures explain that death is not the termination of life, but rather a transition. The real person — the conscious self, or the soul — continues to exist even when the physical body dies.
Reincarnation (known in Sanskrit as Samsara) is the scientific process by which the eternal soul transmigrates from one physical body to another, driven by its desires and karmic reactions.
The Science of Reincarnation
We actually experience reincarnation even during our current life. Science confirms that almost all cells in our physical body are replaced over a period of seven years. You do not possess the same physical body you had when you were a baby, or a ten-year-old child.
Yet, you know that you are the same person. The observer — the "I" — remains constant despite the complete change of the physical body. In the same way, when the final change of the body occurs (which we call death), the soul simply transmigrates to a new body.
How is Our Next Body Determined?
Reincarnation is not a random process. The kind of body we get in our next life is determined by two factors:
- Our Karma: Our pious and impious actions in this life set the boundaries for our next life (e.g., human vs. animal, health conditions, family, and environment).
- Our State of Mind at Death: The Bhagavad Gita (8.6) states that whatever state of being one remembers when he quits his body, that state he will attain in his next life. Our thoughts at death are the sum total of our thoughts, habits, and attachments throughout our life.
Breaking the Cycle
Transmigrating through various species of life (which include plants, insects, aquatic creatures, birds, animals, and humans) is a long, exhausting journey. Reincarnation is not meant to be celebrated; it is a cycle of birth, disease, old age, and death that binds the soul to the material world.
The human form of life is extremely rare and valuable because only humans have the intelligence to ask: "Who am I? Why am I suffering? How can I break this cycle?"
By developing Krishna consciousness through Bhakti-yoga and remembering Krishna at the moment of death, we can break the cycle of reincarnation. Instead of taking birth again in this material world, the soul returns to its original home in the spiritual world (Goloka Vrindavana), attaining an eternal body of pure knowledge and bliss.
