A common idea in modern spirituality is that God is merely an impersonal force, a formless energy, or a void. While Vedic scriptures confirm that God has an all-pervading energy, they reveal that this energy is but an aspect of the Supreme Truth. At the highest level, the Absolute Truth is a Person.
If we — who are created by God — possess personality, individual form, feelings, and the capacity for relationships, how can our source be less than us? A source cannot lack what exists in its creation. Therefore, the Supreme Source must possess personality in its highest, most unlimited form.
anādir ādir govindaḥ sarva-kāraṇa-kāraṇam" — Brahmapada / Brahma-samhita 5.1 ("Krishna, Govinda, is the Supreme Controller. He has an eternal form of bliss and knowledge. He is the origin of all.")
The Three Aspects of the Absolute Truth
The Srimad Bhagavatam (1.2.11) explains that the Absolute Truth is realized in three progressive phases: Brahman, Paramatma, and Bhagavan.
To understand this, Vaishnava teachers offer the analogy of the sun:
- Brahman (Impersonal Light): This is compared to the sunshine. It is the all-pervading spiritual energy and light (known as the brahmajyoti) that emanates from the body of Lord Krishna. Spiritualists seeking liberation from birth and death often merge into this light.
- Paramatma (The Localized Supersoul): This is compared to the sun globe. It is the form of the Lord who resides locally in the hearts of all living entities as a witness, guide, and friend, and within every single atom of the universe.
- Bhagavan (The Supreme Person): This is compared to the sun god residing inside the sun planet. It is the highest realization of the Absolute Truth — the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna Himself, who possesses unlimited qualities, pastimes, and relationships.
The Form of Lord Krishna
Unlike material bodies, which are temporary, limited, and full of ignorance, Lord Krishna's form is sac-cid-ananda-vigraha:
- Sat: Eternal — He never changes, ages, or decays. He is eternally youthful.
- Cit: Full of knowledge — He is omniscient and aware of everything past, present, and future.
- Ananda: Full of bliss — He is the source of all happiness, playfulness, and joy.
- Vigraha: He has a definite, spiritual form — playing a flute, decorated with a peacock feather, and full of charm.
Why Personality Matters
You cannot love or serve a formless force, a law, or an energy. You can only respect it. Love requires two persons: the lover and the beloved. By revealing that God is a Person (Govinda or Krishna), the Vedas open the door to Bhakti — the path of developing an intimate, personal relationship of friendship, service, parental affection, or conjugal love with the Divine.
